U.S. OK could see GE fish enter Canadian food supply chain

OTTAWA - Canada could have trouble keeping genetically engineered salmon out of the food supply if the U.S. government approves the first genetically engineered animal that people can eat.
And according to an internal analysis obtained by Postmedia News, one potential solution is to simply follow the U.S. lead, in order to avoid trade complications. That would mean allowing the GE fish in the Canadian market.
OBAMA ADMINISTRATION ’BAILED OUT’ GM SALMON FIRM
Campaigners say $500,000 grant was made to AquaBounty despite evidence that the firm could soon run out of cash
The Obama administration awarded a coveted research grant to a financially strapped company working to put genetically modified (GM) salmon on American dinner tables, overlooking disclosures that the firm could run out of cash in early 2012, it has emerged.
EUROPE SCORNS SUPERSALMON AS GM BATTLE WIDENS
OSLO (Reuters) - European salmon farmers and breeders who dominate global sales have a wary eye on transgenic American superfish that grow fast and might gulp part of the $107 billion-a-year aquaculture business.
"We don't have any monster pigs in Europe, or monster cows, and there's no need for such a salmon," said Geir Isaksen, the chief executive at big Norwegian fish farmer Cermaq.
HOUSE MOVES TO BAN MODIFIED SALMON
In a potential blow to the future of the biotech industry, a handful of House lawmakers voted last night to bar the Food and Drug Administration from approving any bioengineered salmon for mass consumption.
A terse amendment offered by Reps. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) and Don Young (R-Alaska) would ban FDA from spending any funds on genetically engineered salmon approvals beginning in the next financial year. Less than a dozen lawmakers voted by voice to attach the amendment to an agriculture spending bill expected to pass the House this week.

GE SALMON COULD HARM OUR FISH STOCKS: SCIENTISTS
U.S. company seeks Canadian approval for sale of table-ready modified fish
There’s a risk Canadian fish stocks could be harmed if the world’s first genetically engineered salmon is approved for commercialization, federal scientists suggest.
Internal records obtained by Postmedia News also indicate experts from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) are concerned about ”limited” and possibly ”constrained” regulatory powers around the approvals for GE fish.
