POLISH SCIENTISTS CLOSER TO PIG-TO-HUMAN BODY-PART TRANSPLANTS

Xenotransplantation

SUMMARY: "Researchers in Poland have genetically modified four pigs so that they possess a combination of two genes which make them genetically closer to humans than other pigs. This means human immune systems would be less likely to reject the pigs’ body parts and organs during a transplant operation. This breakthrough, made by experts at the Institute of Zootechnics in Kraków, brings scientists close to being able to produce pigs whose body parts could be harvested for use in patients, Polish newspaper Dziennik Polski reported."

LONDON - British and American scientists are breeding genetically modified pigs in the hope of providing organs for transplant to humans, the project leader wrote in a newspaper Sunday.

Scientists in London and California have begun conducting the genetic experiments to find a solution to record-long waiting lists for organ transplants, fertility specialist Robert Winston said in an opinion piece written for Britain's Sunday Times.

Auckland: Transplants of live cells or tissue from animals to humans have
come a step closer in New Zealand, following a report clearing the path
of cultural, ethical and spiritual objections.

In a report to the Government on Monday, the Bioethics Council said those
objections were outweighed by the potential benefits of such transplants,
called xenotransplantation.
